Symposium on the Recuay culture of ancient Peru

In July 2017, Dr George Lau (SRU) co-organised with colleague and archaeologist Lic. Jorge Gamboa (UNASAM) a major symposium on the Recuay culture of ancient Peru, entitled ‘Primer Simposio Internacional sobre la Cultura Recuay’.  Graciously hosted by Universidad Nacional Santiago Antúnez de Mayolo (UNASAM) and its Escuela de Arqueología, the symposium was supported also by the SRU, UNESCO-Peru, and Peru’s Ministry of Culture.  It was dedicated in memoriam of Prof Joan Gero (1944-2016), a pioneer in the culture’s study.

Held in Huaraz, Peru, the symposium featured noted scholars and delegates from Peru and around the world. Over twenty presentations were delivered across three days, treating diverse themes centred on the culture, including current field investigations, funerary practices, heritage and education projects, historiography and iconography. A detailed summary, in Spanish, of the presentations and panels can be found here. The proceedings are being compiled for a future publication.
